These Orange & Chilli Hot Cross Muffins are a modern twist on a classic — soft, warmly spiced, and filled with bursts of dried fruit and rich organic chocolate. Made with Bennetto organic Fairtrade chocolate, they bring a subtle citrusy sweetness with a gentle chilli kick that takes Easter baking to the next level.

Perfect for sharing over the long weekend (or keeping all to yourself), this easy recipe is ideal if you’re after a more wholesome Easter treat without compromising on flavour.

Ingredients

For the muffins:

  • 200g wholemeal flour
  • 125ml milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 85g maple syrup
  • 60g coconut oil, melted
  • 1 egg (or egg replacement)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 80g currants, sultanas, or raisins
  • 80g Bennetto Orange with Chilli organic Fairtrade chocolate, roughly chopped

For the glaze:

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp water

Optional crosses:

  • 2 tbsp wholemeal flour
  • Water

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 160°C and line a muffin tray with cases.
  2. Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the remaining muffin ingredients and gently mix until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the muffins soft and light.
  3. Fold through the dried fruit and chopped organic Fairtrade chocolate, ensuring even distribution throughout the batter.
  4. If making the crosses, mix the flour with enough water to form a thick paste and pipe over the tops.
  5. Spoon the mixture evenly into the muffin cases and bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until golden and firm to the touch.
  6. While still warm, brush the muffins with the cinnamon maple glaze for a glossy, flavourful finish.

To Serve

Enjoy warm for the ultimate Easter treat, when the organic chocolate is still slightly melted and the spices are fragrant.

Alternatively, slice and toast the next day for a crisp exterior and soft, gooey centre.
